School District No. 52 (Prince Rupert) is located on the north coast of B.C. We serve the primary communities of Hartley Bay, Port Edward and Prince Rupert. We have two secondary schools, six elementary schools, one store-front distributed learning site and one ‘on reserve’ school (Hartley Bay: K-12).

The region is known for its outdoor recreational opportunities as well as a vibrant arts and culture scene.

Westview School to Close in August 2011

Last evening at a Special Open School Board meeting, the Board of Education of School District No. 52 (Prince Rupert) made a very difficult decision that will lead to the closure of École Westview Elementary School in August 2011.

This decision means that École Westview Elementary School will remain open for the 2010 – 2011 school year, but the following September the French Immersion students will move to their new home in Roosevelt Park Community School and the remaining students to their new home in Pineridge Elementary School. .

The Board also decided to delay any decision about the future of Port Edward Community School for a period of 3 to 6 months. During this time the staff of School District No. 52 (Prince Rupert) and of the District of Port Edward will examine options for the future of schooling in Port Edward.

Kindergarten Registration

If your child is 5 years old by December 31, 2010, s/he is eligible to start school this coming September. Please note, even if you are applying for cross-boundary, you must still register your child in his/her neighbourhood school and advise the school that you will be applying for a cross-boundary. Please note, all schools will have full-day kindergarten except Pineridge Elementary School and Westview French Immersion beginning September 2010.

If you have not already registered your child for kindergarten, please do so as soon as possible. Please register your child in his/her catchment area (neighbourhood) school even if you are applying for a cross-boundary transfer.

Cross Boundary Applications

Families that are considering requesting a change in schools for their child/ren must fill out a Cross Boundary Request Form Cross Boundary Application Form - Elementary Forms are also available at all schools and the School Board Office. Forms must be submittedbetween March 1, 2010 and March 31, 2010. Any requests received after March 31, 2010, will not be considered until the first week of school, in September 2010. If your child/ren are currently attending an elementary school on an approved Cross Boundary Transfer request, please note that you MUST resubmit a Cross Boundary Transfer request annually. Secondary students currently attending a secondary school on an approved Cross Boundary Application DO NOT need to reapply.

Middle School to Open in September 2011

Last evening at the regularly scheduled Board meeting, the Board of Education of School District No. 52 (Prince Rupert) made a number of decisions that will lead to a new district configuration of schools effective September 2011.

“We are very pleased to announce that our district will be implementing a middle school for our grade 6, 7 and 8 students for the fall of 2011”, reports Chair Tina Last. “This middle school will support our adolescent learners during this critical time when they are forming attitudes, values, and habits of minds. The middle school will build a transitional bridge from elementary to high school.”

Last June, the Board of Education passed the resolution to amalgamate the two high schools. At this meeting, the board decided that the school currently called Charles Hays Secondary School will be the home of all high school students from grades 9 through 12 also in the fall of 2011. The Prince Rupert Secondary School building will be the new home of middle school students. Therefore, the board defeated the third reading of the bylaw to close PRSS. The decision of the naming of the two buildings will happen at a later time. Meanwhile, the Board of Education will submit its Five Year Capital Plan requesting funds to build a new middle school.

At last night’s meeting the Board also read bylaws to potentially close three schools: Port Edward, Roosevelt and Westview. As stated emphatically by Chair Last, the reading of these by-laws does not mean that a decision has been made to close these schools. This allows the Board to enter into a consultation period that must be no less than sixty days. There will be a schedule of consultation meetings for the three schools early in the new year.
