<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">Last evening at the regularly scheduled Board meeting, the Board of Education of School District No. 52 (Prince Rupert) made a number of decisions that will lead to a new district configuration of schools effective September 2011.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span></span></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">“We are very pleased to announce that our district will be implementing a middle school for our grade 6, 7 and 8 students for the fall of 2011”, reports Chair Tina Last.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>“This middle school will support our adolescent learners during this critical time when they are forming attitudes, values, and habits of minds. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The middle school will build a transitional bridge from elementary to high school.” </span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">Last June, the Board of Education passed the resolution to amalgamate the two high schools.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>At this meeting, the board decided that the school currently called Charles Hays Secondary School will be the home of all high school students from grades 9 through 12 also in the fall of 2011.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>The Prince Rupert Secondary School building will be the new home of middle school students.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>Therefore, the board defeated the third reading of the bylaw to close PRSS.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>The decision of the naming of the two buildings will happen at a later time.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>Meanwhile, the Board of Education will submit its Five Year Capital Plan requesting funds to build a new middle school.</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">At last night’s meeting the Board also read bylaws to potentially close three schools: Port Edward, Roosevelt and Westview.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>As stated emphatically by Chair Last, the reading of these by-laws does not mean that a decision has been made to close these schools.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>This allows the Board to enter into a consultation period that must be no less than sixty days.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>There will be a schedule of consultation meetings for the three schools early in the new year.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span></span></span></p>
